#3....Don’t go seeking rejection. When applying for a public art commission, select the
application that fits your work. If the proposal states the committee wants figurative
bronze sculptures and you do abstract acrylics.... forget it… Don’t even bother
applying. The art committees have, for the most part,
a sense about the art that will augment their vision and will state that in the request for proposals.
Likewise, if a commission has a budget for $400,000 and you have never erected one
larger than $40,000… chances are extremely small that you will qualify..so, once again,
don’t go looking for the rejection.
Thanks, Jeannie for the tip on public art applications. My name is Michele Martinez. I visited your studio with Maria Mendoza back in 1999, when we were both working on the Census 2000 Crew. I guess ten years have flown by since that time! Thanks for the words about applying for public art commissions. I apply for these things regularly (sometimes I get them) but it sure does take a lot of energy to apply. And the rejections can be a bummer. Here in L.A. there is a huge pool of artists. Sometimes I feel like one of many skinny dogs eyeing a few meager scraps! Thanks also for your web site. I am constructing my own and I looked at yours as an example of a good one—not cluttered but visually rich and accessible.
My sister Lee Anne is your local Environmental Science Professor at CSU - Pueblo. I think you have met her. I hope to visit her someday soon. Are you still offering your studio resedency for artists? I’d love to see you both in action!
